Interview Question: What Is Your Dream Job?

What does the interviewer really want to know?

“I will prepare, and someday my chance will come” – Abraham Lincoln.

Just imagine how beneficial this philosophy can prove to every job seeker. While cracking an interview may not be in your hands, being prepared is. You do know that some questions are common to all interviews. One of them is “What’s your dream job?”

If you answer well, the chances of you securing the role are higher.

Would you like to know how you could frame an impactful answer? Let us find out now.

What to mention in your response?

An apt answer is both relevant and inclusive. For instance, if you were applying for the role of an HR manager, it would not help to discuss your dream of being an artist. Interlink and relate your responses.

Create a job profile to help solidify your answer

You can do this in the following two ways. A mental preparation is enough.

  • Touch upon the interviewing Company

When you prepare an answer for “What’s your dream job?”, you must add glimpses of the interviewing company to your reply. Speak about the importance of the role to you. This is necessary to make you a frontrunner for the position.

  • Express interest to join

Additionally, you should add a liner or two around your profound interest to join the interviewing company.

Share examples with the interviewer

Example 1: Here’s how you can frame your reply for the position of a content writer. “I see my dream job as a learning abode, where I will be able to improve my writing skills and optimise my creativity. With a team of expert and experienced writers in your company, I see myself getting closer to my goal.”

Example 2: You can make a precise statement like, “Right from my school days, I was keen on working with an IT firm. I am aware that your firm is one of the leading players in the IT industry, which further strengthens my desire to associate with your firm.”

Focus on the present and the future:

  • Personalise your response:

Do not be a blind follower or mug up general replies while answering the question on your dream job. Attempt to bring out the different shades in you and add uniqueness to your response.

While you do so, speak about your present skills, performance and short-term goals. Do mention your future vision, both personal and organisational.

What not to mention in your response?

  • Detach from titles

You may be appearing for the role of a digital marketer, but while answering, adopt a broader horizon. Look beyond titles. The employer would be happy to receive responses beyond the job description.

Examples of the best answers

Example 1:  I see my dream job as an opportunity to be a team player, where I can contribute substantially to the growth of my peers and subordinates. I would want to work at a place where everyone moves ahead collectively.

Example 2: I would like to work in a role that allows me the freedom of being a people person. I want to be a problem-solver who is all ears to anyone seeking support and guidance.

Example 3: I would love to work in a job that allows me the freedom of taking accountability and responsibility for every task undertaken by me. Since this is my second nature, it would help me excel and contribute to my organisation’s goals.

Final thoughts

What’s your dream job? While this question seems like a tough nut to crack, if you prepare well in advance, that is not the case.

Your goal should be to come up with a unique and wholesome response. Speak about yourself, your skills, your interests, and of course, your desire to associate with the interviewing company.

Be confident and let the interviewer know that “you” are the person they have been looking for.
